Which seeds should
fOU Start?
If you want to grow
hard-to-find varieties, or you need
several plants of one type, starting
your own seeds makes sense. Our first seed-starting
picks: heirloom tomatoes and peppers, and unusual
varieties of lettuce. If you need only one or two
plants of a common variety, it will cost less to buy
seedlings at the garden center than
to buy seed and start your own.
Direct sowing
Some vegetables,
such as beans, corn, and squash,
do better planted directly in garden
soil. It still makes sense to grow
them from seed, but you needn't
start them early indoors.
